At Berkeley, there are no new, confirmed cases of people with coronavirus.
There are more coronavirus cases in San Francisco and the entire Bay Area, but these are not large numbers. A state of emergency is declared in California. The governor generously ordered insurance companies not to charge fees for the treatment of patients with confirmed virus infection.
All schools and workplaces issue hand washing recommendations. In our kindergarten, the director recommended quarantine for 14 days to people who were in countries where coronavirus is already. Apparently, parents are afraid that some children traveled to these countries. A few weeks ago, before a significant increase in the incidence, a friend of Rose from kindergarten returned to South Korea. She was so happy to be back.
A huge Grand Princess cruise ship is expected to dock at Oakland Harbor today. There are 21 people with confirmed coronavirus. One of the healthy passengers is Dean’s friend. The ironic part is that they only visited Hawaii – the virus was already on the boat from a previous cruise!
There are fewer people in stores. A few days ago, toilet paper was sold out at Trader Joes, but more or less you could buy anything. However, last evening the shelves with tomato sauce, pasta, rice and canned food at Whole Foods were quite empty. Dean has stocking some food in the basement.
Small hand sprays are completely sold out. Dean’s employer allowed him to work from home, like many other employers.
For now, schools are open, although some are being closed, some in San Francisco, and today all in-person classes in UC Berkeley have been cancelled until the end of March. The students are supposed to know learn through online classes.
There is little official information, conferences, maybe on purpose? People try not to panic. Hopefully the situation will be clearer within days. At Berkeley, the risk of catching a virus is low. My Mom preschool friend, a nurse, had messaged me in the morning that she was afraid to send her daughter to school
And quite recently, we watched The Contagion movie quite calmly … I wish everyone a lot of health!
